What is the CRA Quick Method of HST accounting and who can use it?

The CRA Quick Method lets eligible small businesses remit a flat percentage of gross revenue (including HST collected) instead of tracking every input tax credit. You must have annual taxable revenues under $400,000 (excluding GST/HST). Most service businesses — consultants, tradespeople, freelancers — save money using the Quick Method compared to tracking individual ITCs. You cannot use it if you are a lawyer, accountant, financial advisor, or if you sell goods.

What are the HST Quick Method remittance rates for Ontario?

Accepted Answer

For Ontario (HST 13%) in 2025: service businesses remit 8.8% of gross revenue including HST; goods businesses remit 1.8%. The difference between the 13% collected and what you remit is your Quick Method benefit. In your first year of using the Quick Method, you also get a 1% bonus credit on the first $30,000 of eligible revenue.

How do I switch to the HST Quick Method with CRA?

To elect the Quick Method, file form GST74 (Election and Revocation of an Election to Use the Quick Method of Accounting) with the CRA. You must file the election by the due date of the return for the first period you want to use it. The election stays in effect until you revoke it or you exceed the $400,000 threshold.
